When buying plants in pots, some of them have small net bags around the roots. Is it better to totally remove the bag, split it, or leave it intact when potting the plant on into bigger pots? I very rarely have any success growing plants when they have these bags around the roots and I can’t tell if they have them until after I have bought the plants. I recently bought two Penstemon plants from a local supermarket which looked lovely and healthy. When I got them home and checked, the roots were very small and constricted so I pot them on and feed them but now both are dead.

I have been removing the grow mesh from plug plants, and have certainly had better rooted plants as a result of doing this.I found the roots do not spread out if the bags are not cut away/removed.

Thank you for your advice. I bought some geraniums a couple of days ago and they had the mesh around the roots so I carefully ripped off the mesh before planting them in the garden border so I will see whether they grow better than my Penstemon plants which finally died.
